The jewel in the Wynn’s crown is Alex. Chef Alessandro Stratta has created a menu that reflects the best of what the French Riviera has to offer. The restaurant offers a secluded and intimate dining experience, with oversize draperies that keep lights dim and eyes sparkling. Continental style abounds, as evidenced by the individual pedestals placed next to women where they may set their purses. This is a place where you’ll want to look spiffy, so women, wear something that sparkles, and men, forget your dinner jacket at your own peril. Descending into the restaurant is every woman’s dream – the gorgeous curved staircase lets you pretend to be a princess on your way to the ball. The decor inside upholds Alex’s spot as one of the most elegant and luxurious restaurants in Vegas. Pure belle epoque, the mahogany wood fixtures are complemented by white furnishings with soft lighting. This restaurant cries out for couples, anniversary dinners, and marriage proposals. Choose from a four-course prix-fixe menu, or a tasting menu for carnivores as well as vegetarians. Offerings are diverse and based on fresh foods flown in daily. Stratta brings his expertise to bear in the combinations exhibited: niçoise vegetables paired with bass and potato gnocchi and candied shallots paired with short ribs, for example. If you like, you may also sample the chef’s choice of wines, for $350 per person. Wines favored by Stratta include standouts like a 2003 Eric Louis Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc, and the smoky dessert wine by Bodegas Toro Albala, the 1971 Don PX Gran Reserva. Sonoma country and Tuscan wines also make appearances. Why spend the money? Because, to put it simply, these wines are worth it. Stratta knows his wine as well as his velouté and bouillon. The corkage fees at similar-level restaurants will generally run you at least $75, so sampling several here can actually turn out to be a delicious bargain.
