One of the best to emerge from the tapas craze, Alta has all the essential ingredients of a top restaurant – the drinks, the dishes and the digs. This handsome Village town house has a few different dining areas and a buzzing bar for the overflow, but the best seats in the house are on the upstairs balcony. Alta manages to be both romantic and festive at the same time, with room for canoodling couples and groups of stylish thirtysomething revelers. The menu is full of Mediterranean dishes that bring the refinement of haute cuisine to small plates. Whatever you do, don’t pass up the deep-fried Brussels sprouts with bacon or the cauliflower sauteed with chorizo, Manila clams and raisins.
