Wine bottles line the walls at the snug, aptly named Bar Jamon, where you can tuck into Spanish meats and cheeses and wash it all down with superb Spanish vintages, from aromatic Rioja reds to light Albariño whites. Bar Jamon is the kid sister to the Spanish restaurant Casa Mono, with which it shares a kitchen and the same owners, the spirited chef Mario Batali and his partner Joe Bastianich. Like all good tapas joints, Bar Jamon invites grazing off little plates, which you can do while perched on stools at high tables, or just standing around the wine bar. The chatty staff is impressively knowledgeable about Spanish wines, and will happily share tips and wine lore with you. Sitting just a few blocks off Union Square, Bar Jamon is perfect for a tipple and tapas before hitting the neighborhood’s other lively nightspots. A chummy atmosphere pervades the small space, and after a glass of wine or two, you may even have some new pals to head out with.
