This famous Jewish-style deli draws tourists and locals alike, all of whom will be sitting right next to you at Carnegie’s cafeteria-style tables. Relax, enjoy your meal and appreciate the chance to chat with people who you normally would not. Much of the wait staff at Carnegie has been here for many years and the veteran waitresses have even been dubbed “witches with a heart of gold.” They are known for their brusque reputation. These ladies are not the sticky sweet, flare-sporting servers that you might be used to, but, rest assured, you will get nothing but prompt and knowledgeable service. Anyway, the real reason to visit this deli is the food. Only Steven Tyler could possibly open his mouth wide enough to fit one of their sandwiches in. You can’t go wrong sticking to the classics: Corned beef and pastrami are incredible, and be sure to order a side of the slaw with Russian dressing. All sandwiches are served with a bowl of sour and half-sour pickles, and if you are craving something sweet, Carnegie is known for its cheesecake. The deli serves until 4 a.m., but during peak hours a line wraps outside the restaurant. Any wait you will have will be worth it.
