Cobras & Matadors
Address: 7615 W. Beverly Blvd. Phone Number: 323-932-6178 Tapas, little bites of food originally meant to sustain drinkers between meals, have become a full-fledged social event, an idea embodied by Cobras & Matadors. This dark and sexy little room has tables crammed so close to each other that, even in L.A., you might talk to the handsome international-looking stranger next to you. If you can hear each other that is; the swirl level reaches ballistic every night. Sidewalk tables offer a slightly more muted option, and ay caramba, are the tapas tasty. You’ll want to order about three plates per person and fight each other for more than your fair share. Skirt steak with a melting Idiazabal cheese sauce is to die for, as are the meatballs and cured meats. Chickpea pancakes, wood fired mushrooms, sweet potato fries, and a dainty fruit and cheese plate hint at the variety on this one-page menu. This place has no alcohol license, so the favored ritual among regulars is to stop first at the same-owner Spanish wine shop next door and select a Rioja or beer to bring along. Make a night of it after the Wilshire Boulevard museums or Melrose Avenue shopping. The boho-chic Loz Feliz neighborhood enjoys a second and larger Cobras & Matadors location, near the Griffith Park attractions. Make a reservation.
