This old-school wedge of the Village, home to beery taverns and mom-and-pop shops, got a welcome shot in the arm with the arrival of this stylish speakeasy-style bar and restaurant. Perhaps better named as Hipster Employees Only, this sexy spot has been pulling in a cool crowd since opening night. From the fortune teller and crimson curtains at the entrance to the undulating mahogany paneling that glows under warm lights, this place is soaked in a retro allure. The owners hail from some of Manhattan’s trendiest nightspots and restaurants, such as Pravda, and they’ve managed to create an ambience that’s both timeless and very “now.” The cocktails are impeccably mixed – try the Ginger Smash – and the bistro fare is excellent. Enjoy steak tartare, pork belly with chestnut paté, or braised veal with polenta in Employees Only’s airy back courtyard.
