The latest venture by celebrity grocer Giorgio DeLuca – of Dean and DeLuca fame – mirrors the splendid Philip Johnson-designed glass-sided building that rises across the street from it. The inviting Giorgione 508 sits on a up-and-coming downtown block, equidistant to SoHo, Tribeca and the West Village. The warm dining space is an amalgam of old-meets-new New York, one wall of exposed brick and wood beams, another of concrete, and another of pale wood. The bohemian-chic crowd – an eclectic bunch that includes neighborhood locals, artists, foodies and trendsters popping in for a bite before heading to the nearby clubs – sits around the glowing, fiberglass-topped bar and tucks into creative, five-star cucina Italiana, at very nice prices. The lasagna, with ricotta, roasted oyster mushrooms, and black truffles, is a delectable steal at $14, and the fragrant roasted tomato soup – just $5 – is better than even an Italian nona could make.
