Address: 4730 Crystal Springs Dr. Zipcode: 90027 Phone Number: 323-913-4688 Website: http://www.laparks.org Griffith Park is like L.A. itself, sprawling and diversified with no defined center. The largest municipal park in the U.S. with some 4,000 acres, Griffith Park can’t be explored on foot. Rent a bike at the ranger station or a horse at the Equestrian Center, or drive through to each destination. Hikers should head to Fern Dell where, past the peaceful stream and picnic area, they can trek up to Mount Hollywood for a million-dollar view. The Observatory is closed for a multi-year renovation, but a satellite location holds astronomy exhibits and a planetarium theater. Train buffs have two stops: The train in the lower park near the pony rides goes a mile loop on a corny and beloved track past a creaky bridge, a phony Western Town and Snow White miniatures. At the northern end is Travel Town with vintage trains to climb on and more to ride. There are two golf courses, a bird sanctuary, a carousel and the unique Shane’s Inspiration – an enormous play structure that is wheelchair accessible. Also within the park are both the terrific Museum of the American West, which pays tribute to cowboy culture and movie westerns, and the Los Angeles Zoo. Locals love Griffith Park’s free summer concerts and the Christmastime Festival of Lights.
