Hide Sushi
Address: 2040 Sawtelle Blvd. Zipcode: 90025 Phone Number: 310-477-7242 Website: http://www.hidesushi.com L.A. holds many mysteries, such as Marilyn Monroe’s death, 24-hours-a-day traffic on the 405 freeway and the popularity of Hide Sushi. This hole in the wall, on Sawtelle Boulevard’s Japanese Restaurant Row, always has a line out the door, while scores of probably just-as-worthy joints up and down the block don’t. Obviously, word is out on everyone’s favorite “secret” sushi bar. You’ve got trendy Westsiders biding the wait with Bluetooths, UCLA profs buried in tattered paperbacks, ex-pat New Yorkers dissin’ the Lakers and even the occasional Asian family. With its L-shaped sushi bar and a few tables, there’s no décor, and don’t come for creative incarnations of Japo-Latino fusion. You’re here for Sushi 101: plain, fresh, huge cuts of hamachi (yellowtail), maguro (tuna) and ankimo (monkfish liver; silky and way better than it sounds). Supplement your fish with the fortifying vegetable or salmon skin salad. Don’t join the uninformed imbibing sake; sushi is meant to be accompanied by beer or tea. It’s cash only and cheap enough for you to eat your weight in futomaki. Next door to Hide Sushi is a cool Japanese market crammed with goodies, and the Nuart Theatre, with its unique film retrospectives, is just up the street.
