Address: 742 N. Highland Ave. at Melrose Zipcode: 90038 Phone Number: 323-466-1507 Website: http://www.highlandgrounds.com Surrounded by houses, billboards, tire stores and gas stations on Highland Avenue, Highland Grounds is technically in Hollywood, but nowhere near the strip, so you’ll have to drive south for a bit to find it. If that’s your goal, though – getting out of the sometimes-exhausting scene of Sunset or Hollywood boulevards – you’ll love it here. The local talent on display at Highland Grounds can run the gamut from wonderful to amusing-bad to bad-bad, so if you don’t want to listen to the band or comedy act, don’t pay the cover charge; instead, kick back outside with a pitcher of sangria and get cozy around one of the fire pits. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t order food as well – the new wood-burning oven bakes excellent pizza, and the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are an eclectic mix of Greek, Cuban, Italian and American (OK, hush puppies) offerings at ultra-cheap prices. Jeans and a long-sleeved shirt do just fine here, as the crowd ranges from semi-hip and young, to semi-hippy and older. Highland Grounds is also a rare place for smokers to indulge, if that’s your thing, and if you’ve got artist friends, tell ‘em to get their work up at the monthly table top show.
