Address: 1869 N. Vermont Ave. Zipcode: 90027 Phone Number: 323-666-9961 Its house-shaped sign as a beacon, House of Pies has been a dessert destination for many years. Open late and in close proximity to the Greek Theatre, Hollywood Boulevard and even downtown, the place attracted well-dressed couples and families who would stop by this mostly residential area for a bedtime treat of fresh strawberry pie or warm apple pie a la mode. Then, lo and behold, the Los Feliz neighborhood itself became a place to see and be seen. Bars, boutiques and theaters line Vermont and Hillhurst Avenues, servicing the arty movers and shakers who pay obscene rents for hardwood-floored flats here. And yet, House of Pies remains unchanged. The bright lights of the interior draw attention to the fake plants, and a lot of the hanging out, table-hopping and fashion-parading happens on the patio – if you don’t mind the cigarette smoke. At brunch, perfectly serviceable eggs and burgers help soothe hangovers but, of course, save room for a slice. Get the strawberry if it’s available or try banana cream, rhubarb or pecan. Whether you’ve been swing dancing at The Derby or browsing graphic novels at indie Skylight Books, House of Pies is a yummy way to appreciate Los Angeles old and new.
