Los Angeles Farmers Market
Address: 6333 W. 3rd St., at Fairfax Zipcode: 90036 Phone Number: 323-933-9211 Website: http://www.farmersmarketla.com One of L.A.’s most beloved gathering places, the Farmers Market was in jeopardy of being torn down when part of the property was designated as the site of the entertainment and shopping destination The Grove. Angelenos could be heard screaming from the beach to the mountaintops. A coexistence arrangement was reached, and the Market was left as is. The Market was first established in 1934 as a place where farmers could rent a spot to sell produce from their trucks; you’ll still find fruit stands and butchers from the old days, plus original vendors such as the Ultimate Nut & Candy Company. You can do some souvenir shopping or buy foods to send home, but come to eat yourself silly. Mornings are a virtual screenwriters’ meeting around Bob’s Coffee & Doughnuts, and a patio table near Moishe’s or Loteria Grill could be the one where Walt Disney sketched his visions for Disneyland. Live bands play at dusk near The Gumbo Pot, which serves L.A.’s best Cajun fare, and many a diet has been blown on Du-Par’s pies. Newcomer Pampas Grill draws the biggest crowds with its Brazilian churrasco (meats sliced from a spit onto your plate), and Littlejohn’s English Toffee House makes sweets for live audiences. Walk the half-block distance from Farmers Market to The Grove, or take the double-decker trolley just for fun.
