Address: 8585 Sunset Blvd. Zipcode: 90069 Phone Number: 310-854-7201 Website: http://www.melsdrive-in.com As a final pit stop after a night of carousing on Sunset Boulevard, Mel’s Drive-In is a great place to grab some thick food to staunch the alcohol. The original restaurant, in San Francisco, was used in George Lucas’ ode to the ‘60s, American Graffiti, but torn down shortly after filming was complete. The Los Angeles version of Mel’s Drive-In keeps the vibe alive, and plays host to framed stills from the finished movie, starring extremely young versions of Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford. Happy and bright, Mel’s Drive-In is a big ol’ diner that remains a staple for lunching businessman, groups of car-cruising teens, wide-eyed night owls and middle-aged couples. Despite the mini-heart symbols next to certain menu items denoting “healthy alternatives,” Mel’s Drive-In serves up fat-filled, sugar-filled, starch-filled feasts, day or night, with breakfast fare available at all hours. Don’t forget to order some classics: Grilled cheese sandwiches and a variety of burgers are native to this land, and the chocolate and vanilla shakes are enormous and practically a meal in themselves. There’s a newer, second location just south of the Hollywood & Highland complex, but if it’s your first time, make a point to hit the larger one, with better people-watching, on Sunset.
