After all, this is the street that brings you House of Freaks, Red Balls, Retail Slut and various purveyors of “water pipes,” where mohawked, body tattoo-sporting metal-heads, stoners and the occasional clean-cut student looking to smirk at all of the above shop. Located at the corner of Melrose and Sierra Bonita, the Snake Pit can be a bit tough to find if you’re not actively searching for it. Surprisingly, once you’re inside, you’ll see it’s a pretty basic, cramped, hole-in-the-wall sports bar, with hockey, basketball or baseball broadcasts turned up loud depending on the season or the whims of the staff. Try to ignore the crumbling plaster. Instead, focus on the twenty microbrews and imported beer on tap, or spicy chicken wings, tacos and other random, tasty bar snacks that are available. Come as you are, dressed down or dressed up; no one will really care, and there’s never a cover charge. If you’re strolling Melrose with a less than enthusiastic shopper, take him or her inside the Snake Pit for a beer to keep their spirits up.
