Address: Central Park West & 67th St. Phone Number: 212.873.3200 Website: http://69.0.173.64 For all its tourist trappings, Tavern on the Green is the real deal, a storied piece of Manhattan history that should be on every visitor’s itinerary, if only for a peek inside as you explore Central Park. From its humble beginnings in 1870 as a sheepfold, when it housed 200 sheep that grazed in the park, to its rise, fall, and rise once again as one of Manhattan’s signature restaurants, the Tavern on the Green has gamely evolved with the times – a true key to its success. You can dine on the outdoor garden terrace, under the soft glow of lanterns, amid bright bouquets of flowers and Central Park foliage, or in the fin-de-siecle _dining room with crystal chandeliers and stained glass windows. Over the years, Tavern on the Green has feted countless politicians and movie stars, and hosted Broadway show opening night receptions and film premieres, from _Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors. The contemporary American cuisine is fine, though pricey for what you get. If you’re on a budget, go for the Garden Bar menu (service starts at 5 p.m.), with tasty appetizers, like a grilled chicken quesadilla heaped with avocado or a crispy bruschetta, that you can wash down with a cocktail or two.
