It may be hard to outshine the MoMA’s world-class art collection but thanks to Chef Gabriel Kreuther, The Modern is doing just that. The sleek, light-flooded restaurant couldn’t be better named, epitomizing modern in all senses of the word: Dine on exquisite modern French fare amid the cool tones and crisp lines of modern Scandinavian furnishings while basking in vistas of the stark, modern Sculpture garden. Kreuther has hit his culinary stride and reveals his creativity and panache in every dish, from the robust-yet-delicate chorizo-crusted cod to fragrant scallops and veal sweetbreads drizzled in wild mushroom jus. He works magic with olive oil, using it to poach salmon and flavor ice-cream. Perhaps the most telling proof of Kreuther’s success is that The Modern has become a destination in itself – not bad, considering that it’s housed within one of the world’s most famous museums.
